The Broadway production of “Aladdin” will surpass “Miss Saigon” to become the 14th longest-running show in Broadway history after the Aug. 6 evening performance.
According to the production’s internal count, “Aladdin” will mark its 4,092nd performance this evening at the New Amsterdam Theatre, where it has played since opening on March 20, 2014. “Miss Saigon” played 4,091 performances on Broadway during its original run from 1991 to 2001. (According to IBDB, which tallies a slightly different count, “Aladdin” will mark this milestone after the evening performance on Aug. 9. By both counts, the Disney production will rise in the ranks of longest-running Broadway productions by the end of this playing week.)
Only 13 other shows in Broadway history will have outpaced “Aladdin.” They are: “Jersey Boys” (4,642 performances), “Rent” (5,123), “The Book of Mormon” (5,311), “Beauty and the Beast” (5,462), the original run of “Mamma Mia!” (5,758), the 1976 revival of “Oh! Calcutta!” (5,959), “A Chorus Line” (6,137), “Les Misérables” (6,680), “Cats” (7,485), “Wicked” (8,458), “The Lion King” (10,921), the 1996 revival of “Chicago” (11,297) and “The Phantom of the Opera” (13,981). (Performance counts are totaled as of Aug. 3.)
Since its debut, “Aladdin” has welcomed more than 6.5 million audience members and has regularly ranked among the top 10 highest-grossing shows on Broadway.
The show’s global presence includes 11 productions across four continents. In addition to the Broadway staging, “Aladdin” is currently running in Tokyo and Busan, South Korea.
