Melvin Van Peebles’ “Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death” has announced plans to return to Broadway in 2022.

The musical, which premiered on Broadway in 1971, will be directed by Kenny Leon (“A Soldier’s Play) and produced by Lia Vollack (“MJ”). Exact dates, casting and theater details have yet to be announced.

Mario Van Peebles, the son of the musical’s composer and book writer, will serve as creative producer.

The musical features a series of musical monologues about the realities of street life and being Black in America. The monologues are set to a score of hip-hop, spoken word, jazz and blues based on several of Van Peebles’ albums.

“Ever since I heard the name Melvin Van Peebles, I have equated it with excellence, beauty and courage,” Leon said in the press release. “I am grateful to have this opportunity along with my creative team to introduce to some, and re-introduce to others, the richness of this unique musical experience.”

The show originally opened in 1971 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre and later moved to the Ambassador Theatre. It was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including best musical and best original score.
