Tony Award nominee Sky Lakota Lynch recounts how the cast visited Oklahoma to learn about the world of the Tony-winning musical.

On Sept. 9, company members of the 2024 Best Musical Tony Award winner “The Outsiders” appeared on Today to perform the production’s opening number, “Tulsa ‘67,” led by incoming leading player Trevor Wayne as Ponyboy Curtis. Sky Lakota-Lynch, who received a Tony nomination for his featured turn as Johnny Cade, explained how the cast visited Oklahoma (where the musical takes place) as part of their preparation.

The cast of Broadway’s hit musical “The Outsiders” joins TODAY to share how they visited Oklahoma to prepare for their roles and the impact the novel had on them when they were younger. Then, they perform “Tulsa ’67” live in Studio 1A as part of the Citi Concert Series.

Directed by Danya Taymor, “The Outsiders” features a Tony-nominated book by Adam Rapp and Justin Levine and a Tony-nominated score by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Levine. The musical opened on April 11, 2024 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
