Theater licensor Theatrical Rights Worldwide has announced the acquisition of exclusive worldwide performance rights to “Pirates! The Penzance Musical.” The jazzy reimagining of Gilbert & Sullivan’s 1879 comic opera “The Pirates of Penzance” will now be available for amateur stagings.

Transporting the pirates from Penzance to 1800s New Orleans, “Pirates! The Penzance Musical” features an adaptation penned by Rupert Holmes. In this version, W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s story is retold with a French Quarter-style score.

“The magic tale of ‘Pirates’ has never been more expertly crafted than in this magical reshaping of the beloved characters and songs by Rupert Holmes,” said Steve Spiegel, chief executive officer of Theatrical Rights Worldwide, in a statement. “Ideal for all schools, community and professional theaters, this version will bring joy to actors and audiences alike.”

“Pirates! The Penzance Musical” arrived on Broadway at Roundabout Theatre Company’s Todd Haimes Theatre on April 4, 2025, and opened on April 24. The Broadway cast was led by David Hyde Pierce, Jinkx Monsoon and Ramin Karimloo. The musical netted a Tony nomination for Best Revival of a Musical and concluded its limited run on July 27.
