Tony Award-winning composer-lyricist and librettist Shaina Taub will take a hiatus from her onstage role in the Broadway revival of “Ragtime” from Jan. 6 through March 29, 2026. Taub portrays Emma Goldman in the musical.

Taub posted a statement to her personal Instagram:

“Playing Emma Goldman is a childhood dream come true. I'm taking a leave from the show from Jan. 6 thru March 29, and I want to share why. This is a vulnerable topic often kept in the shadows, but I'm posting in the hopes that someone reading feels less alone.

My husband Matt and I have been trying for a baby. In the past year, I've been pregnant three times. But each time ended in loss. A first trimester miscarriage during Suff's last December. A second trimester TFMR, which stands for termination for medical reasons (please look it up) in May. And another miscarriage the week Ragtime opened. Honestly, it's been hell. After multiple hospitalizations, my body badly needs a break. And my mind could use it too.

I'm grateful to everyone at Lincoln Center Theater for their support. Performing during loss has been part of my healing, and I'll be glad to return for the rest of the run. This remarkably kind cast and crew have been a real lifeline.”

Lear DeBessonet directs the production of “Ragtime,” which began previews on Sept. 26 and opened on Oct. 26 at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre.

According to a representative for the production, a temporary replacement for the role of Emma Goldman will be announced.
