Jennifer Hudson, who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Effie White in the 2006 film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls,” has signed on as a producer of the Broadway revival. The previously announced production, to be directed by Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown, is set to open in the fall of 2026 at a venue to be announced.
“Twenty years ago, my life changed forever because of a film called ‘Dreamgirls,’” Hudson said in a statement. “I am beyond honored to join the extraordinary producing team behind this special, newly reimagined Broadway revival.”
“Dreamgirls” is Hudson’s third Broadway producing credit, following “Smash” and “A Strange Loop,” for which she won a Tony Award.
Hudson has also performed on Broadway. She played Shug Avery in the 2015 Tony-winning revival of “The Color Purple.”
Hudson joins previously announced “Dreamgirls” producers Sonia Friedman Productions, Sue Wagner and John Johnson.
Originally directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett, “Dreamgirls” features a book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger. The musical follows the ups and downs of an all-Black, female singing group called the Dreams.
Further creative team and other information about the upcoming “Dreamgirls” revival will be announced.
