Several original cast members of “The Book of Mormon” will return to the musical for its 15th anniversary, in an event the production is calling “Magical Mormon Mystery Week.” Performances from June 9-14 will feature surprise appearances by original stars Josh Gad, Andrew Rannells, Nikki M. James and Rory O’Malley.
The original cast members will perform select scenes and songs from the musical alongside the current cast; exactly which songs and scenes will be different for every show. Members of the original ensemble will also appear at certain performances throughout the week, as will book writers, composers and lyricists Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez.
“The Book of Mormon” will celebrate its 15th anniversary on March 24, having played over 5,000 performances at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre. The musical won nine 2011 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Featured Actress for James, and has since seen two national tours and a West End production, which has been running since 2013.
To coincide with its anniversary, “The Book of Mormon” is also reissuing its Grammy Award-winning original Broadway cast recording on June 26. It will be available in special vinyl and CD editions, including booklets with the complete lyrics, production and studio photos, and new commentary by Parker, Stone and Lopez, as well as orchestrator, vocal arranger and music supervisor Stephen Oremus and “CBS Sunday Morning” correspondent David Pogue.
