The family-favorite board game Monopoly is partnering with a Broadway musical. The Op Games, the board game publisher behind the tabletop classic, has announced a version of the game called Monopoly: “Hamilton.” The new edition is intended to help celebrate the musical’s 10th anniversary. The Op licenses Monopoly from toy company Hasbro.
Featuring classic Monopoly components, the game allows fans to explore the world of “Hamilton” as they buy, sell and trade songs from the show, like “My Shot,” “The Schuyler Sisters” and “Satisfied.” Taxes, duels and political scandals may strike players as they make their way to the end of the game.
“With ‘Hamilton’ still making headlines and sparking joy 10 years later, we couldn’t think of a better Broadway show to bring to life on the tabletop,” said Dane Chapin, chief executive offer of the Op. “For those that can’t make it to New York City to see the musical live in-person, we hope you’ll turn on the filmed version, gather your family and friends and spend time together playing Monopoly: ‘Hamilton.’”
Created for two to six players ages eight and up, Monopoly: “Hamilton” features six custom collectible tokens representing recognizable items from the show — whether players choose to wield the quill and ink like Alexander Hamilton himself, command the stage with a microphone, chronicle history with a book, rule with a crown, toast to revolution with a stein or grab a tricornered hat. The game also includes 32 letters (called houses in regular Monopoly) and 12 federalist papers (hotels). Community chest and chance cards have been renamed as Burr and Hamilton cards, respectively, complete with custom-themed money featuring different characters from the show.
Featuring a Tony Award-winning book and score by Lin-Manuel Miranda, “Hamilton” retells the story of America’s founding fathers through songs that blend hip-hop, jazz, R&B and musical theater. “Hamilton” began previews on July 13, 2014, and opened on Aug. 6, 2015 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The musical took home 11 Tonys, including the top prize of Best Musical, as well as the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Monopoly: “Hamilton” is available for purchase at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, at Barnes & Noble and on the “Hamilton” website. The game is currently sold out via the latter, but Monopoly: “Hamilton” is not a limited release. This is a first-run of inventory and intended to be replenished.
