Tony Award nominee Bess Wohl’s drama “Liberation” was named Outstanding Broadway Production at the 37th GLAAD Media Awards held in Los Angeles on March 5. The play, which was recognized for its fair and inclusive representation of the LGBTQIA+ community, won in a category that included fellow nominees “Oedipus,” “Purpose,” “Redwood” and “Smash.”

“Liberation” follows a group of women in the 1970s undergoing a consciousness-raising workshop, exploring themes of female agency and shifting queer identities within the feminist movement. The play began Broadway previews on Oct. 8 and opened on Oct. 28 at the James Earl Jones Theatre. “Liberation” concluded its limited engagement on Feb. 1.

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremony also celebrated the legacy of Tony-winning Broadway star Liza Minnelli, who was presented with the inaugural Liza Minnelli Storyteller Award. Honored for her upcoming memoir, “Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!,” Minnelli was introduced by Broadway and cabaret veteran Michael Feinstein and a career retrospective narrated by RuPaul. During her acceptance speech, EGOT winner Minnelli told the audience, “You make me so proud, ’cause you’re strong, and you stand up for what you believe in.”

The musical-theater canon was further recognized in the film categories. The movie adaptation of the Tony-winning musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman” won for Outstanding Film — Wide Theatrical Release. Based on the Manuel Puig novel, the story depicts the relationship between a political prisoner and a queer window dresser who use Hollywood escapism to survive their incarceration in an Argentine prison.

Tony Award winner Alan Cumming’s appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” earned a win in the Outstanding Variety or Talk Show Episode category. The winning segment was titled “Guest Host Alan Cumming on Attacks Against the Trans Community & Bringing Kindness Back in America.”

Additionally, a Breaking the Binary Theatre concert staging of “The Drowsy Chaperone” at Carnegie Hall received a Special Recognition honor for its contribution to trans and nonbinary visibility in the theater.

The 2026 GLAAD Media Awards ceremony was hosted by Jonathan Bennett, the “Mean Girls” movie star and Broadway alum who replaced as Sir Robin in the Broadway revival of “Spamalot.”

The 37th GLAAD Media Awards will begin streaming on Hulu on March 21.
