A live capture of the West End production of “Hadestown” is coming to cinemas this summer. “Hadestown: The Musical,” as the theatrical release has been dubbed, will be released theatrically throughout North America on July 24, with a U.K. release date to follow. The film version features the five original principal cast members of the Broadway production: Reeve Carney as Orpheus, Tony Award nominees Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, Amber Gray as Persephone and Patrick Page as Hades and Tony winner André De Shields as Hermes, along with a West End ensemble cast.
“Hadestown” features a book and Tony-winning score by Anaïs Mitchell. The West End and Broadway productions of “Hadestown” were directed by Rachel Chavkin, who won a Tony for her work on the musical. The West End mounting was nominated for the Best Musical Revival Olivier Award; the Broadway staging won the Tony for Best Musical. The live capture was filmed by director Brett Sullivan of Steam Motion and Sound; he has directed numerous filmed theatrical productions on Broadway, the West End and internationally, including the box office record-setting 2016 theatrical release of “Miss Saigon.”
The “Hadestown” capture is to be distributed by Crosswalk, Bleecker Street’s event cinema division, along with stage and film producer-distributor LD Entertainment in North America and all English-speaking territories. This is the first of a series of Broadway captures Crosswalk and LD say they hope to release together. It’s also the two distributors’ second collaboration on an event cinema release, the first being “Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience,” a concert film featuring the titular K-pop group. Crosswalk previously released a capture of “Waitress: The Musical” in 2023, also helmed by Sullivan.
“We are eager to share this iconic performance of ‘Hadestown,’ featuring a unique combination of our original Broadway cast and West End company, made for the big screen,” said producer Mara Isaacs in a statement. “A great deal of love and care has gone into capturing the show on film, allowing it to live beyond the stage and reach new audiences around the world for years to come.”
“We are thrilled to be embarking on our second Crosswalk release and couldn’t be happier to be partnered with our friends at LD,” added Bleecker CEO Kent Sanderson. “‘Hadestown’ has touched the hearts of so many people around the world, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share it even more widely with this beautifully accomplished film.”
“Hadestown” began with a series of independent productions in Mitchell’s home state of Vermont with a cast of local talent. Mitchell released a concept album containing music from the show in 2010, which led to a series of readings and developmental workshops before its Off-Broadway premiere in 2016. It played Canada’s Citadel Theatre in 2017 and London’s National Theatre in 2018. On March 22, 2019, “Hadestown” opened at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre, where it has since become the venue’s longest-running show. The current West End production opened in 2024. “Hadestown” is produced by Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold and Tom Kirdahy.
