Award-winning journalist and television personality Gayle King will spotlight Black excellence on Broadway by hosting a one-night Black Theatre Night performance of the Tony Award-nominated “Gypsy” revival. The event will take place during the 7 p.m. performance on Aug. 7 at the Majestic Theatre.

Following the performance, which will offer a special welcome to Black theatergoers, all audience members will be invited to stay for a conversation moderated by King with the production’s director, George C. Wolfe, and Tony-nominated “Gypsy” star Audra McDonald, discussing the significance of this revival, the recontextualization of its characters through a Black lens and the broader future of Black theater in mainstream spaces.

This staging of “Gypsy” has drawn attention for its direction by Wolfe, new choreography by Tony nominee Camille A. Brown and its trio of lead performances by Black actors McDonald, Jordan Tyson and Tony nominee Joy Woods. The production began previews on Nov. 21, 2024 and officially opened on Dec. 19. The revival is scheduled to end its run on Aug. 17.

“Gypsy” received five 2025 Tony Award nominations and won Drama Desk Awards for McDonald’s lead performance as Rose and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical Revival.

“Gypsy” is produced by Tom Kirdahy, Mara Isaacs, Kevin Ryan and Diane Scott Carter.
