Exclusive: Gavin Lee to join Broadway’s ‘The Lion King’ as Scar

The two-time Tony Award nominee is currently featured in “Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends.”

Disney’s “The Lion King” will welcome a new principal cast member. Gavin Lee will take over the role of Scar at the Minskoff Theatre beginning on July 22. Lee will replace Michael Hollick, who will play his final performance in the role on July 20. 

Lee is a two-time Tony Award nominee for his leading turn as Bert in 2006’s Disney musical “Mary Poppins” and for his featured turn as Squidward in 2017’s “SpongeBob SquarePants.” Lee’s other Main Stem credits include the 2014 revival of “Les Misérables” and the currently running “Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends,” which will complete its twice-extended engagement on June 29.
