Concord Theatricals has announced that it has secured exclusive worldwide secondary stage licensing rights to the Tony Award-winning musical “The Outsiders.” For information on licensing availability, visit Concord Theatricals.
Based on S.E. Hinton’s novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s motion picture, “The Outsiders” features a book by Adam Rapp with Justin Levine, music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Levine, with music supervision, orchestration and arrangements by Levine.
“The ‘Outsiders’ novel held particular importance for each member of our creative team growing up, as we all discovered it when we were around Ponyboy’s age,” said Levine in a statement. “We worked tirelessly to honor Susie Hinton’s raw and emotional world with this adaptation and cannot wait to share it with the world.”
“In the development of the musical, our team worked in close collaboration, and I’m thrilled to welcome Concord Theatricals, my longtime publisher, to our partnership,” added Rapp, who wrote five other plays that are also licensed by Concord. “The story explores self-discovery and chosen family in such an intense and profound way, and we look forward to new audiences resonating with the work the way we have.”
“We’re proud to have ‘The Outsiders’ find a home with Concord Theatricals. It means a lot to us to be partnering with a company that truly understands and values the heart of this story,” said Clay and Chance. “From the start, we did our best to stay true to the world Susie Hinton created — full of soul, struggle and hope — and we’re excited to see it continue to live on through new voices and new productions.”
“Generations of kids and adults have loved and related deeply to the classic novel and film, and now the hit Broadway musical,” said Sean Patrick Flahaven, chief theatricals executive of Concord. “We’re honored to work with these creators and producers to bring their acclaimed, tuneful and kinetic show to audiences worldwide.”
Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967, “The Outsiders” follows Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend Johnny Cade and their chosen “greaser” family of outsiders battle with their affluent rivals, the Socs. The musical navigates the complexities of self-discovery as the greasers dream about who they want to become in a world that may never accept them.
“The Outsiders” opened on Broadway on April 11, 2024, at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre under the direction of Danya Taymor with choreography by Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman. The musical took home four 2024 Tony Awards including the top prize of Best Musical. The show is currently playing on Broadway at the Jacobs and across North America on tour.
Beyond “The Outsiders,” other recent acquisitions by Concord Theatricals include Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “Hamilton,” George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s 2025 drama “Good Night, and Good Luck,” 2024 Best Play Tony Award winner “Stereophonic,” Heidi Schreck’s adaptation of “Uncle Vanya,” Amy Herzog’s Tony-nominated version of “An Enemy of the People” and Max Wolf Friedlich’s drama “Job.”
