“The Outsiders” has stayed gold. Twenty months after opening, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical has recouped its $22 million investment, as of the week ending Dec. 28, 2025, according to representatives for the production. The show began previews on March 16, 2024, and opened on April 11, 2024, at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

“The Outsiders” is one of three currently running shows which opened on Broadway during the 2023-2024 season and continues to run. (The others are “Hell’s Kitchen,” which will close on Feb. 22, and “The Great Gatsby.”) “The Outsiders” is also the third Broadway show to announce recoupment this season, after “Waiting for Godot” and “Art,” and the fifth show of the 2023-2024 season to announce recoupment, after “Gutenberg! The Musical!,” “Merrily We Roll Along,” “An Enemy of the People” and “Stereophonic.”

In a statement, producers also announced that future productions are planned for London’s West End, Asia and Australia. A North American tour of “The Outsiders” began in October 2025.

Based on S.E. Hinton’s seminal Oklahoma-set coming-of-age novel and its film adaptation by Francis Ford Coppola, “The Outsiders” features a Tony Award-nominated book by Adam Rapp with Justin Levine, Tony-nominated music by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and lyrics by Jamestown Revival and Levine. The musical is directed by Danya Taymor, who won a Tony for the mounting. Choreographers Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman also received Tony nods, as did orchestrators Levine and Matt Hinkley, the latter of whom also served as musical director.

“It’s been a true honor to bring Susie Hinton’s beloved book to life onstage for those who are new to this story and those who have cherished it for almost 60 years,” said producers Matthew Rego, Michael Rego and Hank Unger of the Araca Group. “We’re forever grateful to the extraordinary creative team, cast, crew and everyone at the Jacobs Theatre who have poured their hearts into ‘The Outsiders.’”

In addition to winning awards for Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical at the 77th annual Tony Awards, “The Outsiders” won Tonys for best lighting design by Hana S. Kim and Brian MacDevitt and best sound design by Cody Spencer. Scenic designer AMP featuring Tatiana Kahvegian was also nominated for her work, as were principal cast members Brody Grant, Joshua Boone and Sky Lakota-Lynch. Lakota-Lynch, who is still part of the current company as Johnny Cade, has announced that he will be taking his final bow in the show on March 15.

“The Outsiders” is produced by the Araca Group, American Zoetrope, Olympus Theatricals, Sue Gilad and Larry Rogowsky and Angelina Jolie. The general manager is 321 Theatrical Management.
