For the fifth consecutive year, the Broadway Green Alliance and Times Square Alliance are spotlighting climate action with the Broadway Celebrates Earth Day Concert. Now in a new, larger venue — the red steps of Duffy Square — the performance will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on April 25.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature over 100 performers, including Broadway talent and students from local schools and community groups. Featured performers include Tony Award nominee Jenn Colella, Sonya Balsara, Mara Davi, Jenn Gambatese, Arielle Jacobs, Jelani Remy and Shayna Steele. Tony winner Jessie Mueller and Tony nominees Anika Larsen and Jarrod Spector will reunite on the steps of Duffy Square for the first time since “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.”
Broadway Celebrates Earth Day will also feature performances by the current Broadway productions of “& Juliet,” “Chicago” and “Wicked,” as well as the Jimmy Awards and Baayork Lee’s National Asian Artists project. Isabelle Stevenson Award winner Julie Halston, Emmy Award nominee Jackie Hoffman and Drama Desk Award winner Andréa Burns of the original Broadway cast of “In the Heights” will make special appearances during the concert.
Playbill serves as the media partner for the Earth Day Concert, which is sponsored by SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, The Knickerbocker Hotel, the Natural Resources Defense Council, Climate First Bank, Creative Goods, Le Botaniste, Mill and Sweet Hospitality Group.
During the performance, the pedestrian plaza will hold a special exhibit from the Climate Museum featuring family-friendly activities from climate advocacy organizations Headcount, Materials for the Arts and the Wildlife Conservation Society. The Earth Day Concert is also part of the New York City Department of Transportation’s Car-Free Earth Day, in which streets and plazas around the five boroughs are closed to car traffic, hosting public art and community programs.
“In five years, this concert has grown exponentially, reflecting our community’s determination to champion climate solutions and find joy in building this movement together,” said Molly Braverman, the Broadway Green Alliance’s executive director, in a statement. “We’re so grateful for five years of partnership and collaboration with the Times Square Alliance, and we cannot wait to welcome hundreds of performers, students and climate champions to a bigger stage at the Crossroads of the World to demand a healthier future for all.”
“We are very excited to see this event grow even larger with new partners, Broadway stars and students filling the plazas of Times Square with music and climate education,” added Tom Harris, president of the Times Square Alliance.
