The nonprofit Americans for the Arts (AFTA) has announced the appointment of Ayanna N. Hudson to the new role of chief programs officer. Hudson, would began in the role on June 2, is expected to play a key role in leading and advancing programmatic initiatives to serve AFTA’s membership and the broader arts community, as well as champion the arts and its role in society.
With three decades of experience in leadership, strategic direction and relationship building, Hudson has dedicated her career to expanding access to the arts for Americans. During her 13-year tenure with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Hudson held several senior roles. She oversaw three national grant-making programs for nonprofits and local arts agencies, ensuring alignment with the agency’s priorities and delivering measurable results. Under her purview, the budget for the Challenge America funding opportunity increased by 20%, extending the reach of the arts into rural and other underserved communities.

Hudson joins AFTA as the organization gets ready to hold its Americans for the Arts Annual Convention (AFTACON), from June 11-14 in Cincinnati. The event brings together hundreds of cultural leaders, advocates and organizations. The conference features a Pay-What-You-Can registration model to ensure accessibility for all arts leaders.
