Five Broadway shows are among the nominees for the 37th GLAAD Media Awards, which recognize excellence in the representation of LGBTQ people across the media landscape.

Announced on Jan. 7, this year’s nominees for outstanding Broadway production include recent and current plays “Liberation” by Bess Wohl, “Oedipus” adapted by Robert Icke and the Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning “Purpose” by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Also nominated are the musicals “Redwood”, featuring a book and lyrics by Tina Landau with music and lyrics by Kate Diaz, and “Smash,” with a book by Rick Elice and Bob Martin, music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Furthermore, writer/director Bill Condon’s recent film adaptation of Terrence McNally, John Kander and Fred Ebb’s Tony-winning musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman” is among the nominees for outstanding film with a wide theatrical release. So, too, is Sony Pictures’ “Blue Moon,” written by Robert Kaplow, which follows Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart on the evening that “Oklahoma!” opened.

In addition, Breaking the Binary Theatre’s October staging of “The Drowsy Chaperone in Concert” at Carnegie Hall was awarded a Special Recognition honor, “for their immeasurable impact and contributions to LGBTQ acceptance and visibility,” according to the nominations press release.

Nominees for the awards are selected on the basis of four sets of criteria: 1) fair, accurate and inclusive representation; 2) boldness and originality; 3) impact; and 4) overall quality. Voters include GLAAD staff, board, donors and volunteers and selected media industry experts.

The 37th GLAAD Media Awards will be presented on March 5, 2026 in Los Angeles.
