# ‘Othello’ on Broadway announces recoupment

The new Broadway production of “Othello” has recouped its investment. The Kenny Leon-helmed revival of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy began previews on Feb. 24 and [opened](https://www.broadwaynews.com/the-broadway-review-a-well-acted-othello-flounders-in-a-murky-pool-of-direction/) on March 23 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The production, which stars Denzel Washington as Othello and Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago, is scheduled to play a limited engagement through June 8.

This announcement marks the fourth play opening in the 2024-2025 season to reveal recoupment; [“All In: Comedy About Love,”](https://www.broadwaynews.com/all-in-recoups-on-broadway/) [“Romeo + Juliet”](https://www.broadwaynews.com/broadways-romeo-juliet-revival-recoups-investment-ahead-of-closing/) and [“Oh, Mary!”](https://www.broadwaynews.com/cole-escolas-broadway-comedy-oh-mary-recoups-investment/) both recently made back their initial investments. 

As of the week ending [April 27](https://www.broadwaynews.com/grosses-analysis-broadways-box-office-softens-but-attendance-remains-strong/), “Othello” has played every week to houses that were no less than 99.5% full. The production has broken the Barrymore house record several times, having grossed in excess of $2 million each week for its first four weeks on the Main Stem. Since the week ending [March 30](https://www.broadwaynews.com/grosses-analysis-floyd-collins-old-friends-and-stranger-things-start-strong/), “Othello” has surpassed $3 million in gross each week, one of only two plays to ever achieve such a feat.

“Othello” chronicles the titular Moorish general and his lieutenant Iago; Iago’s vengeance-fueled manipulation and deceit causes Othello to act out against his wife, Desdemona.
