# Kate Rockwell to depart the Broadway cast of ‘Mean Girls’

Kate Rockwell, who originated the role of Karen Smith in the “Mean Girls” musical, will play her final performance in the Broadway show on March 8.

Rockwell has played Karen Smith since the world premiere of “Mean Girls” at Washington D.C.’s National Theatre in November 2017\. A press representative for “Mean Girls” confirmed Rockwell’s upcoming departure from the musical.

Rockwell made the initial announcement in a [Jan. 30 post](https://www.instagram.com/p/B79zd5ZJbdg/?ref=broadwaynews.com) on her personal Instagram account.

“It’s hard to put into words all the gifts you’ve given me, some of which I’m sure I have yet to understand,” she wrote on Instagram of her character. “You have given me a family, you have given me joy, you have given me the opportunity to stumble around in your ridiculously tall shoes for over two years. But mostly, you have given me the person I am today.”

Erika Henningsen, who originated the role of Cady Heron, is also set to depart the Broadway show on Feb. 22\. She will [join the cast of “Flying Over Sunset,”](https://broadwaynews.com/2020/01/16/erika-henningsen-and-more-join-cast-of-flying-over-sunset/?ref=broadwaynews.com) which opens on April 16 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater.
