# Josh Groban out of March 16 ‘Sweeney Todd’ performance

Josh Groban will not appear in the title role at the March 16 performance of “Sweeney Todd,” due to a non-COVID illness, Broadway News has learned.

A representative for the production told Broadway News that Groban will return “as soon as possible,” though a date has not yet been confirmed.

Standby Nicholas Christopher, who is normally featured in the musical as Pirelli, will take on the role of the Sweeney Todd for the performance. Pirelli will be played by understudy Daniel Torres.

Directed by Thomas Kail, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s “Sweeney Todd” is currently in previews ahead of its scheduled March 26 opening night at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. The revival is produced on Broadway by Jeffrey Seller.
