Inside Broadway has announced its slate of programming for the nonprofit’s 2026-2027 season. The nonprofit theater company provides educational theater programming to students of New York City public schools, reaching over 100,000 students annually. This is also the 45th anniversary season for Inside Broadway, which was founded in 1982.

The 2026-2027 school year’s programming includes the Build a Musical in-school residency, the Creating the Magic backstage showcase and the Inside Broadway Acting Company’s professional touring production. Many of these programs are funded by the New York City Council as part of a grant through its Cultural After-School Adventures (CASA) initiative, which supports extracurricular arts programming in city schools. Additional support was provided by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department of Education and the New York State Council on the Arts.

In the Build a Musical program, presented in partnership with CASA, teaching artists lead in-school residencies focused on the elements of musicals. Students and teaching artists will collaborate on the choreography, acting, voice directing, design, lighting and sound throughout the program, culminating in a showcase performance for their local community. The residency program reaches almost 1,500 students across 50 New York City schools. This year’s theme is “NYC Musical Mystery Melodies.”

This winter, the biannual, CASA-funded Creating the Magic program will offer about 1,000 public school students a backstage look at a Broadway show. Broadway professionals, including actors, musicians, stage managers and sound and lighting technicians, will host students in a Times Square theater to discuss the various jobs and crafts that go into making a Broadway show. Past participants in the program include “& Juliet,” “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “The Great Gatsby,” “SIX,” “Into the Woods,” “King Kong,” “Mamma Mia!,” “Wicked,” “Annie,” “Cinderella,” “Motown,” “Cats,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Hairspray,” “Les Misérables,” “Chicago” and “Moulin Rouge!”

Finally, from January to March 2027, the Inside Broadway Acting Company will embark on a tour of 50 schools throughout the city, presenting a production of “It’s a Grand Old Flag.” The company, composed of Actors’ Equity and Local 802 AFM members, has conducted such professional tours of school auditoriums for over 30 years.

“This is a special year for Inside Broadway as we celebrate our 45th anniversary season, and we intend to mark this major milestone with a special lineup of programming,” said Inside Broadway’s founder Michael Presser in a statement. “What started as a free student ticket program for ‘Cats’ on Broadway has since grown into one of NYC’s most impactful arts education organizations, introducing nearly 3 million NYC public school students to the magic of Broadway, both on and off the stage. Quality arts education is vital to youth development, and with the support of the New York City Council, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and our local council members, we will continue to teach and uplift aspiring young artists and theatergoers for generations to come.”

“Arts education gives students a place to take risks, build confidence and discover talents they didn’t know they had,” added New York City council speaker Julie Menin. “That’s why the Council is investing more than $17 million in after-school arts programming, including Inside Broadway, through the Cultural After-School Adventure Program. As Inside Broadway celebrates 45 years of introducing thousands of public school students to the magic of live theater, this investment will give even more young New Yorkers free, hands-on access to the arts. Broadway is the cultural heartbeat of our city and a powerful economic engine that supports tens of thousands of jobs. By inspiring the next generation of artists, audiences and creative leaders, we're investing in New York City's future both on and off the stage.”
