Singer-songwriter and actor Dolly Parton died on Aug. 25 in Nashville, Tennessee. Best known for writing and recording country music standards like “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You,” Parton was 80 years old.

Parton’s music has frequently appeared on Broadway; the 1993 holiday-season special “Candles, Snow & Mistletoe” featured Parton’s “With Bells On,” which she originally sang as a duet with Kenny Rogers. Later, she penned the Tony Award-nominated music and lyrics for the stage adaptation of the 1980 comedy film “9 to 5.” Parton appeared in the original film alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Parton co-wrote and was producing the [upcoming Broadway bio-musical “Dolly,”](https://www.broadwaynews.com/dolly-a-true-original-musical-will-come-to-broadway-this-winter/) based on her own life and rise to fame. “Dolly” will contain some of Parton’s best-known hits alongside original music she composed for the show. Parton also co-wrote the musical’s book with Maria S. Schlatter. Tony winner Bartlett Sher is set to direct.

“Dolly” had its world premiere at Nashville’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in a 2025 run. The musical will play its first performance at Broadway’s St. James Theatre later this year, followed by an official opening on Jan. 19\. “As was Dolly’s wish, the Broadway production of ‘Dolly: A True Original Musical’ will begin previews Dec. 7 at the St. James Theatre in New York City,” said the show’s producers in a statement.

The musical is being produced on Broadway by Danny Nozell, Adam Speers for ATG Productions and Gavin Kalin Productions.
