Concord Theatricals has announced its acquisition of the licensing rights to the musical “Almost Famous” from its authors Cameron Crowe and Tom Kitt. The show will be made available for licensing through Concord at a later date.

“Almost Famous” is based on the 2000 film (also penned by Crowe) about Crowe’s real-life experiences as an aspiring music journalist assigned to follow a rock band on the verge of stardom. Crowe, who won an Academy Award for the film’s screenplay, wrote the book and collaborated on the lyrics of the stage adaptation with Tony Award-winning “Next to Normal” composer Kitt.

“‘Almost Famous’ has always been a celebration of music, fandom and family,” said Crowe in a statement. “I’ve been so lucky to collaborate with Tom Kitt on ‘Almost Famous: The Musical,’ and our years developing the show have been so joyous. At our very first meeting, we talked about the day we could bring our show to theaters and schools and stages everywhere. As personal as the story is, every performance became a group adventure that left us all cheering. Thanks to the great legacy work of Concord Theatricals, ‘Almost Famous: The Musical’ can now live wherever casts and audiences gather to answer the question — what do you love about music? Everything.”

“Getting the chance to collaborate with one of my heroes, Cameron Crowe, on the musical adaptation of his masterpiece, ‘Almost Famous,’ has been an absolute dream come true,” added Kitt. “I couldn’t be more proud of what we have created, or more excited that the show has found a home at Concord Theatricals. I am incredibly grateful to Concord for supporting Cameron and me through our process of reimagining the piece, and I look forward to all the wonderful productions that await, brought to life by great artists around the world who I know will relish celebrating the music, humanity, poetry, humor and beauty of Cameron’s life and work, just as I have.”

“Almost Famous” opened at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Nov. 3, 2022, and closed on Jan. 8 2023\. That spring, the musical earned a Tony nomination for its score. “It’s a pleasure to continue our relationship with Tom and to welcome Cameron to the Concord Theatricals family,” said Concord’s chief theatricals executive Sean Patrick Flahaven in a statement. “Having been a co-producer of the Broadway production, this new version of the show is rockin’, funny, poignant and true to the spirit of the film.”
