The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), the nonprofit organization founded by civil rights attorney and “Just Mercy” author Bryan Stevenson, has joined the new Broadway musical “Wanted” as a co-producer. This is the first Broadway producing credit for EJI.

As part of its multi-pronged mission, EJI is dedicated to challenging racial and economic injustice and confronting America’s history of racial inequality. “Wanted” adapts the true story of Mary and Martha Clarke, Black twin sisters who lived in post-Reconstruction Texas. When a sharecropping debt threatens their mother’s home, the sisters pass as white and become outlaws to raise the money their family needs. The musical, directed by Tony Award nominee Stevie Walker-Webb, features a libretto by Angelica Chéri — a descendant of the Clarke sisters — and music by Ross Baum.

“Wanted” began previews at Broadway’s James Earl Jones Theatre on Oct. 15 ahead of a Nov. 8 opening. The production stars Solea Pfeiffer as Mary Clarke, Liisi LaFontaine as Martha Clarke and Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Ledisi as their mother, Tallulah.

EJI joins a producing team led by the Tony-winning P3 Productions, the production company behind “How to Dance in Ohio” and “Call Me Izzy.” “Wanted” and EJI are also collaborating to create a lobby display at the James Earl Jones Theatre that, according to a release, “will illuminate these shared themes, deepen audiences’ engagement with the story and offer resources for further learning.”

Founded in 1989 by Stevenson, EJI provides assistance to communities that have been affected by poverty and unequal treatment through legal assistance, a health clinic and more. EJI also operates the Legacy Sites, a series of museums, memorials and art installations throughout Montgomery, Alabama, that explore the history and lasting impact of racial injustice in the United States.

“The Equal Justice Initiative is thrilled to co-produce this compelling and brilliant new American musical,” said Stevenson in a statement. “Despite the suffering and inequality, generations of Black people continued to fight for freedom and a world without racial bigotry. The creativity and tenacity of these remarkable Americans can be heard in ‘Wanted’ … At a time when too many want to forget the challenges of our past, ‘Wanted’ invites us to not look away but, instead, find inspiration, strength and even joy in understanding what justice requires.”
