# Broadway shows surge in their final weeks on the Great White Way

Broadway saw minor changes at the box office last week as some productions surge ahead of closing.

For the week ending Aug. 7, the 23 shows on Broadway grossed $27,682,655 and had total attendance of 212,341\. These figures are down 6% and 5%, respectively, compared to last week.

The three highest-grossing productions were “The Music Man,” “The Lion King” and “Hamilton.”

Three musicals played to 100% capacity or greater last week, including “Hamilton,” “MJ” and “Dear Evan Hansen.”

The latter of those three, which is closing in on the [final weeks of its Broadway run](https://broadwaynews.com/2022/06/07/dear-evan-hansen-to-end-broadway-run-in-september/?ref=broadwaynews.com), had a strong week at the box office as well. The musical grossed $915,655, up about 4% from last week.

Also nearing the end of its Broadway run is “Tina.” Last week the production grossed $1,044,595 and played to 85% capacity, both figures up nearly 11% and 5%, respectively, from the previous week. The Tina Turner musical is set to play its [final performance Aug. 14](https://broadwaynews.com/2022/06/07/tina-to-play-final-broadway-performance-in-august/?ref=broadwaynews.com).

“POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive” will also conclude its Broadway run this week. The play grossed $579,297 and played to 65% capacity in its penultimate week, both figures up 12% and 10%, respectively.

In the first full week of standby Julie Benko’s run as Fanny Brice, “Funny Girl” grossed $582,269, a 23% decrease from last week when Beanie Feldstein concluded her time with the musical. However, capacity was up about 4% as the musical played to houses that were nearly 76% full.

“A Strange Loop” saw a dip at the box office last week, grossing $645,832 and playing to 82% capacity. These figures are down 13% and 8% from last week.

Just six of the 23 productions played to less than 80% capacity including “Beetlejuice,” “Chicago,” “Funny Girl,” “Mr. Saturday Night,” “POTUS” and “The Kite Runner.”
