The Broadway box office held steady in the first week of the 2022-2023 season.

For the week ending May 29, the 35 productions grossed $33,093,845 and played to nearly 83% capacity. These numbers show a decrease in gross of 0.5% and a 1.1% capacity increase, despite slightly lower overall attendance, compared to the previous week.

By comparison, during the first week of the 2018-2019 season – the last full pre-pandemic season – grosses totaled $37,106,954.

“Hadestown” played to 100% capacity in André De Shields’ final week as Hermes. “The Music Man” also played to capacity.

Three productions played their final performances on May 29: “The Skin of Our Teeth,” “Birthday Candles” and “Mrs. Doubtfire.”

“The Skin of Our Teeth” saw almost a 23% increase in attendance and a 76% uptick at the box office in its final week of performances, playing to 66% capacity and grossing $289,682.

Two shows were impacted by COVID-related cancelations: “Aladdin” and “Mr. Saturday Night.”

Through five performances, “Aladdin” grossed $841,176.53 and played to 97% capacity.

“Mr. Saturday Night,” which only played four performances before Billy Crystal tested positive for COVID-19, grossed $396,540 and played to 63% capacity. The show is now on a pre-planned hiatus until June 7.
