Broadway composer-lyricist Eddie Perfect, who earned a Tony Award nomination for his score for “Beetlejuice,” has announced the founding of his own record label, which he will fund and direct. Excited Animal Records will launch with the release of “Beetlejuice The Musical Live at the Regent Theatre Melbourne,” a live cast album of the Australian company, which starred Perfect as the titular demon. The record will be released on Oct. 31.

“The Melbourne season of ‘Beetlejuice The Musical’ is one of the performing highlights of my life,” Perfect said in a statement. “The response from Australian audiences was passionate and loud, and what they wanted above all else? An Australian cast album. So here it is.” The album, which was recorded live in 2025, will mark the first recording of the musical “Beetlejuice” since the original Broadway cast recording was released in 2019.

Aside from this “Beetlejuice” recording, Perfect said he has a slate of new cast albums and is collaborating with Australian composer-lyricists to release remastered recordings from previous years. Another focus of Excited Animal will be cast albums of new Australian works.

“In Australia, music theater is very much still an imported culture,” Perfect told Broadway News. “Commercial musicals are dominated by Broadway and West End titles. In many ways Australian music theater is a victim of its own success. We are extremely good at putting on foreign musicals, but we have invested very little in creating viable pathways to developing our own works of music theater. Having said that, there is a very strong and passionate collective of Australian composers, lyricists and book writers who are already making a mark both nationally and globally.

“There’s also an entirely new generation of music theater creators who are ready to explode upon the Australian and global stage,” Perfect continued. “But right now the task of recording a cast album (imperative to the ongoing life of a musical) is prohibitively expensive and complex, meaning many new mainstage works of Australian music theater do not receive a cast album. Excited Animal Records aims to address and correct this. I may be hopelessly naive and ignorant, but I have chutzpah, and there is undoubtedly a huge appetite amongst Australian fans of music theater to hear our artists’ voices and stories on record.”

Perfect said the label will begin with musical works for stage and screen, but is open to musicals, concerts, song cycles and any other genre with a theatrical bent. He has also emphasized that audio quality is the utmost priority. “Often Australian cast albums sound noticeably inferior to Broadway cast recordings, usually due to the restrictiveness of cost and time,” Perfect shared. “It’s really important to me that our albums can sonically sit alongside their Broadway and West End counterparts and hold their own.”

Perfect made his Broadway debut as the songwriter and vocal arranger of 2018’s “King Kong.” The following year, “Beetlejuice” opened on Broadway with music, lyrics and arrangements by Perfect. The musical, which is based on the movie of the same name, has returned twice to Broadway. With a book by Scott Brown and Anthony King and direction by Alex Timbers, “Beetlejuice” is currently on tour throughout North America.
