Produced by Chunsoo Shin/OD Company and Richard Barton Lewis/Southpaw Entertainment by special arrangement with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, the production marks the musical’s pre-Broadway engagement and will begin previews March 27, 2027, with an official opening on April 4 and a scheduled closing on May 2. “August Rush” will be directed by three-time Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall. With a story by the movie’s screenwriters, Paul Castro and Nick Castle, the musical’s book will be by Nick Blaemire. The score will include music inspired by the film with additional songs by Blaemire, Van Hughes, Tom Kitt and others to be announced. Kittwill also provide music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements. As in the movie, the musical follows the titular character, August Rush, a young boy who was orphaned in New York City by circumstance. August is a gifted musician and escapes his orphanage to search the city for his birth parents. On his quest, he meets a mysterious stranger, known as Wizard, who shelters young street musicians in an abandoned Fillmore East theater. August begins busking and uses his talent to find the parents he never knew. The movie starred Freddie Highmore as August with Robin Williams as Wizard. Casting for the musical has not been announced. Marshall’s most recent Broadway credit is “In Transit,” the first a cappella musical on the Main Stem, which she directed and choreographed. Marshall began her Broadway career as a choreographer, assisting her brother, Rob Marshall, on “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” Her first credit as choreographer was 1995’s “Swinging on a Star.” Marshall went on to choreograph, as well as direct and choreograph, multiple revivals and the original “Seussical.” She was nominated for the Tony for Best Choreography for the 1999 revival of “Kiss Me, Kate” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It” and took home the award for “Wonderful Town,” “The Pajama Game” and “Anything Goes.” Marshall was also nominated for the Tony for Best Direction of a Musical for “Wonderful Town,” “The Pajama Game,” “Anything Goes” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” Blaemire has written the book, music and/or lyrics for “Safety Not Guaranteed,” which premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, “Space Dogs,” which bowed at MCC Theater, and the upcoming “Soon,” which will open this fall at the Loft at St. Luke’s Theatre. Hughes previously collaborated with Blaemire on the music for “Space Dogs.” Kitt is best known for his score for the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Next to Normal,” for which he also won Tonys for best score and best orchestrations. He has also been nominated for the Tony for best score for his work on “If/Then” and “Flying Over Sunset” and for the Tony for Best Orchestrations for “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Jagged Little Pill” and “Hell’s Kitchen.” Kitt is a two-time Grammy winner for Best Musical Theater Album for “Jagged Little Pill” and “Hell’s Kitchen.” Producer Shin and his OD Company are currently represented on Broadway by “The Great Gatsby.” Southpaw Entertainment produced the film “August Rush.” --- *Correction: A previous version of this story misstated the theater where Nick Blaemire’s musical “Soon” will appear.
