Artwork by Broadway caricaturist Al Hirschfeld has expanded its footprint at the Algonquin Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Prints by Hirschfeld, curated in partnership with the Al Hirschfeld Foundation and its director David Leopold, have been added to each of the hotel’s guest rooms, suites and hallways.

This redecoration was part of a wider renovation of the Algonquin, led by interior design firm Crème/Jun Aizaki Architecture and Design in collaboration with Highgate Hotels’ design and development arm, Lucid. The Al Hirschfeld Foundation also helped create a redesigned menu for the hotel’s Blue Bar Restaurant and Lounge, featuring Hirschfeld’s artwork throughout.

Each guest room and suite’s decor is now anchored by a custom triptych of artwork, featuring exclusive Hirschfeld pieces. The hallways of each floor feature its own specific collection of Hirschfelds. The further inclusion of Hirschfeld’s artwork in guest rooms strengthens the Algonquin’s historic ties to Broadway and the arts as a whole. The hotel features prints spanning 60 years of Hirschfeld’s career. “All but two Hirschfeld artworks in the hotel are reproductions made exclusively for the hotel,” Leopold told Broadway News. “There’s over 100 different pieces of art scattered throughout the hotel in rooms, hallways and public spaces. There are two hand-signed limited-edition prints in the lobby on either side of the doorway to the Oak Room. These are on loan to the hotel from our collection.”

Hirschfeld was also personally or professionally connected to several members of the Algonquin Round Table. This informal lunch club of literary figures, which met daily at the hotel throughout the 1920s and 1930s, included several playwrights whose productions Hirschfeld drew, as well as journalists and editors who oversaw the publication of his artwork. He remained a frequent visitor to the Algonquin throughout his life, returning in 1990 in order to help the hotel restaurant recreate classic dishes that had since disappeared from its menu. In 1991, the Algonquin named a suite after Hirschfeld.

Later, in 2014, the Al Hirschfeld Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting interest in the dramatic arts, was invited to create an exhibit in the hotel’s lobby. Refreshing these exhibits became an annual tradition over the next five years, culminating in a partnership between the hotel and the foundation in 2021.

“As you are probably aware, no other hotel in America, or, I dare say, in the world has such a connection to an artist the way that Algonquin has with Hirschfeld,” said Leopold. “There is simply nothing else like these two New York institutions — and I don’t think it is hyperbole to say legends — in partnership to give such a remarkable experience that is both truly New York and also very universal.”
