# Alex Edelman, Sarah Paulson, the 76th Tony Awards and more earn Emmy Award nominations

Nominations for the 2024 Emmy Awards were announced on July 17\. Broadway was well-represented across multiple categories. The 2023 Tony Awards ceremony received multiple nods, while several Main Stem performers were acknowledged.

Presented by the Television Academy, the Emmys honor achievement in television. Per Academy rules, a series must have aired a minimum six episodes by May 31 to be eligible; a limited series is eligible if all episodes have aired by that date. The 76th Emmy awards will air live on ABC Sept. 15 at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PST. 

The 76th annual Tony Awards was recognized in five categories, including Outstanding Variety Special (Live). Glenn Weiss and Karla Puno Garcia were nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special and Outstanding Choreography for Variety or Reality Programming, respectively. The ceremony received additional nods for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special and Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special.

Alex Edelman was nominated in the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special category for “Just For Us,” the solo play that earned him a [2024 Special Tony Award](https://www.broadwaynews.com/tony-awards-name-2024-honorees-and-special-award-recipients/). “Just For Us” was [filmed](https://www.broadwaynews.com/live-capture-of-alex-edelmans-just-for-us-will-be-released-on-hbo/) during its summer 2023 Broadway engagement at the Hudson Theatre. Mike Birbiglia was nominated in the same category for “The Old Man & The Pool,” which played on Broadway in the [2022-2023 season](https://www.broadwaynews.com/in-the-old-man-the-pool-mike-birbiglia-uses-backstrokes-as-a-method-of-moving-forward/). Coincidentally, Birbiglia was a producer on “Just For Us.”

Another newly minted Tony winner, Sarah Paulson, who won for her leading turn in “Appropriate,” was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” The category also includes Marcia Gay Harden (a 2009 Tony winner for “God of Carnage”) and Parker Posey (who appeared in 2000’s “Taller Than a Dwarf”) for guest spots on “The Morning Show” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” respectively.

Two-time Tony winner Jonathan Pryce was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for “The Crown” and for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for “Slow Horses.” Paul Rudd received an Outstanding Narrator nomination for his work on “Secrets of the Octopus;” this category also included Broadway alum Angela Bassett for “Queens.” Rudd received an additional nod for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for “Only Murders in the Building.”

“Only Murders” received acting nominations for several other Broadway alums, including Tony winner Martin Short and Tony nominee Steve Martin for their leading performances, Tony nominee Meryl Streep for her supporting turn, as well as Tony winner Matthew Broderick and Tony nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph for their guest appearances.

Randolph, who won an [Academy Award](https://www.broadwaynews.com/davine-joy-randolph-and-emma-stone-win-2024-academy-awards/) in March for “The Holdovers,” is one of two 2024 Oscar winners to be nominated. Robert Downey, Jr, who won an Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” was nominated for his supporting turn in “The Sympathizer.” Downey is slated for a September Broadway debut in [“McNeal.”](https://www.broadwaynews.com/robert-downey-jr-will-make-broadway-debut-in-ayad-akhtars-mcneal/) 

The slate of Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series nominees includes the aforementioned Streep as well as 1969 Special Tony recipient and two-time Tony nominee Carol Burnett (for “Palm Royale”), 1982 Tony nominee Sheryl Lee Ralph (in a third consecutive nomination for “Abbott Elementary”) and Main Stem alum Liza Colón-Zayas (for “The Bear”). 

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series also includes four Broadway veterans: two-time Tony winner Christine Baranski (for “The Gilded Age”), as well as Nicole Beharie, Karen Pittman and Tony nominee Holland Taylor, all of whom received nods for “The Morning Show.”

Additional performers cited include Tony winners Billy Crudup (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for “The Morning Show”) and Tracy Letts (Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Industry”), and Tony nominees Hank Azaria (Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for “The Simpsons”), Carrie Coon (Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for “The Guilded Age), ”Tom Hollander (Oustanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Anthology Series or Movie for “Feud: Truman vs. Capote”) and Jean Smart, who received a third consecutive nomination in the Oustanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category for “Hacks.”

Alan Cumming and RuPaul, both of whom won Tonys as co-producers of 2022 Best Musical winner “A Strange Loop,” were nominated in the Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program. Cumming is also a Tony-winning performer. Cumming was nominated for his hosting duties on “The Traitors” and RuPaul for “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

The Outstanding Host for a Game Show included Broadway alums Jane Lynch, nominated for hosting “Weakest Link,” and Keke Palmer, who was acknowledged for hosting “Password.”
