“Patriots” is headed to the screen. The upcoming Broadway play from Tony Award-nominated playwright Peter Morgan has added Netflix as a co-producer, a representative for the streamer confirmed to Broadway News. Tied to the producing credit, Netflix is developing a film adaptation of the Olivier Award-nominated drama about Russia under the reign of Vladimir Putin.

It is currently unknown what form “Patriots” will take on the streamer. Netflix is home to Broadway captures (à la “Diana: The Musical”) and film adaptations of stage shows (like “13” and “Tick, Tick...Boom!”), as well as series; Morgan’s “The Crown” is a Netflix original.

“Patriots” is set in the post-Soviet Union 1990s, during the decline of billionaire Boris Berezovsky as he confronts Putin and the rise of the Russian oligarchs. The Broadway run will feature Will Keen reprising his Olivier-winning performance as Putin alongside Luke Thallon as Roman Abramovich and Tony nominee Michael Stuhlbarg as Berezovsky.

Rupert Goold is set to direct the previously announced Broadway staging, which is slated to begin previews on April 1 and officially open on April 22 at the Barrymore Theatre.

In addition to Netflix, “Patriots” is being produced on Broadway by Sonia Friedman Productions, Nederlander Presentations, Richard Winkler, Stephanie P. McClelland, Ted Snowdon, Jamie deRoy/Ken Greiner and Richard Batchelder.
